There are many advantages to using a treadmill, the first is that they burn off more calories than most other exercise equipment. This is firstly because you are stood up throughout the exercise, unlike other machines like exercise bikes and rowing machines. The next advantage is the variable speed and incline settings, you can walk, jog or run at any speed you desire which allows you to exercise at just the right level. Adjusting the incline so that you have a bit of a gradient when running also adds allot to the work out and makes it much harder, running on a high speed with an incline will have your heart pumping very fast indeed! Some treadmills even have clever programmes where they simulate a run that could feature uphill running, downhill running and running on a level surface, this varies the workout nicely and adds fun to the workout.

Most treadmills are motorised, this means that they are powered and keep a constant speed that you can set. Motorised treadmills are much better than the manual, non-motorised models as they offer constant speed and much better stability, the manual models rely on your momentum to keep going so lose all of the advantages of a motorised treadmill. An important feature to look out for is the surface that the treadmill uses to run on, some surfaces are designed to be low impact which means the surface will absorb allot of the pressure created by the exercise instead of it being taken out on your joints which can cause injury. Ankle, knee, achilles tendon and back joints are the worst affected so if you use a treadmill allot then a low impact model would be a very good idea, not using a low impact treadmill can cause injuries and strains on those joints.

Another feature to look out for is the heart rate monitor, most treadmills come with these but there are some that do not. These measure your heart rate which tells you how hard your body is working, the faster the heart beat the faster it is having to work to supply your body with oxygen and nutrients. Over time and as you get more fit your heart will be able to do this with less effort so it is necessary to keep increasing the amount of work you are doing on the treadmill, if your heart is not working hard then it is time to up the amount of exercise you are doing by either speeding up the treadmill, setting the incline higher or just working out for longer. Most exercise machines come with a chart which tells you what your ideal heart rate should be, this is determined by your age, sex and weight. So it is important to try and stay within this heart rate range and over time you will have to work harder to stay in that range as you become fitter.

So there are a few things to consider when buying a treadmill, we recommend a motorised model with a low impact surface. Also look out for a heart rate monitor and treadmill models that offer an incline and special workout programmes as these add to the exercise with variety and also making it harder. Treadmills are also quite cheap these days, there are lots of expensive models with lots of cool features but you can get good models at cheap prices, lots of the shops run cheap special offers too so good deals can be found quite easily, always shop around though to find the best cheap deals.
